How much dry ice do I need?

Tell us how long it must stay frozen and what it is travelling in, and we will suggest a quantity and the best form to order.

How long must it stay frozen? (hours)
Box size (litres of inside space)
Insulation
Weather on the journey

How the estimate works

Dry ice turns to gas (sublimates) steadily, faster in warm weather and in thinly insulated boxes. We estimate the daily loss from the size of the box, the insulation and the weather, multiply by the number of days, and add a 25% allowance for delays.

Tips for keeping it cold longer

  • Use a thick, tight-fitting insulated box, and fill empty space so there is less air to warm up.
  • Put dry ice on top of the contents, since cold air sinks. Do not seal the box airtight; it must be able to vent.
  • Pack as late as you can, and avoid opening the box.
  • Never carry it in a vehicle cabin. Always wear insulated gloves when handling it.
